Applicants must first visit the Embassy of India, Washington DC between (10:00 a.m-12:00 p.m) or Indian consulate of Chicago (455 North City front Plaza, Suite 850, NBC Tower Chicago, Illinois 60611) to seek approval from the concerned authorities before submitting the application at the Indian Passport Application Center-Chicago or Center-Washington DC.
For SFO Jurisdiction :
Applicants holding Indian passports with the following categories of US visas: C, AS6, AS7, AS8 and CO8 are NOT eligible to apply for re-issue or any service on passports.
For B1/B2 visa holders, Consulate will issue only Short Validity Passports.
Applicant need to visit the SFO Consulate for approval of Tatkal service any working day of the Consulate between 09:00 to 12:00 PM. Tatkal applications will not be accepted at BLS in person or by post without prior approval of the Consulate.

An ordinary passport is valid for ten years from the date of issue. It may please be noted that the Passport Issuing Authority, can issue passports even for a shorter duration. Minors are issued passports for 5 years or up to attaining 18 years, whichever is earlier.
It is an offence under the Passport Act 1967 to furnish false information in the application. Passport facilities would be denied on grounds of suppression of material information, submission of incorrect particulars, willful damage/loss of passport or for unauthorized change/tampering. The Passport can be impounded or revoked for violation of one or more of the provisions of the Passport Act.
It is an offence to hold more than one valid passport at a time.
Your Indian passport establishes your identity in a foreign country. Hence it is important to have it re-issued before the date of expiry. The passport can be submitted for re-issue up to one year before the date of expiry
Your Indian passport is a valuable document. It should always be either in your own custody or in the custody of a person duly authorized by you. If lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Mission and to the local police.
We suggest that you keep a photocopy of your Indian passport in a safe place, separate from the passport. The photocopy should include the pages showing the personal particulars, validity of the passport, date/place of issue, also the stamp of departure from India, entry in U.S.A and the visa issued by the U.S.A authorities
All minors are required to have a separate passport. Old practice of including a child’s name in the Passport of either of the parents has been discontinued.
On acquiring U.S nationality, the Indian passport should be submitted to the nearest Embassy of India/Consulate General(s) of India for cancellation. It is returned to the holder after cancellation. Use of Indian passport for travel to India after acquiring any foreign nationality is an offence and invites penalty. After acquiring U.S.A citizenship, you do not remain an Indian citizen and need an Indian visa to travel to India.
B1/B2 category visa can not be accepted for passport renewal without consulate approval.
Applicants willing to apply for Tatkal has to apply in washington DC applicable for atlanta juridiction applicants only.
C visa applicants are not eligible to apply for passport service without consulate approval.
AS6, AS7 and AS8 visa category can not be accepted for passport renewal
IR 6 category - Applicant has to add spouse name in his passport.
Please strictly apply in the Embassy/Consulate jurisdiction covering your area of residence.
Re-issued/New passport would bear your current USA address for which satisfactory verifiable documentary proof is submitted by you.
Important Information: You may be asked to provide additional documents, which are not mentioned on the checklist as per the requirements stipulated by the Embassy of India/Consulate General(s) of India.

The passport sized photo(s) which are glued to your application, as well as any additional loose photos sent with application, must follow the strict guidelines mentioned below. If the photo submitted with your application does not meet the requirements mentioned herein, the application will remain on hold in our office for a maximum of 21 calendar days, and will not be processed until acceptable photos are sent to our application center. An email will be sent to the email listed on your order form requesting additional photographs if necessary.
Photo must be professional grade, a photo printed from a home/personal printer will be rejected.
The image should be 2 inches by 2 inches (2”x2”).
The image must have adequate brightness and contrast.
The skin tone should be natural. In case of over-exposure or under-exposure of the photo, the skin is either too dark or too light, photo will not be acceptable.
It should show a close up of the head and (partial) shoulders.
The image should be straight looking, centered with neutral expression.
Face should be in sharp focus and clear with no ink marks/creases/lines.
The face (from forehead edge to bottom of chin) should be 70 to 80% of the photo or one inch height.
The eyes must be open and no hair obscuring the face.
Prescription glasses if worn should be clear and thin framed and should not have flash reflection or obscure the eyes.
Head coverings, hair, head-dress or facial ornaments should not obscure the face.
The photo must have plain light and white background.
There must be no other people or object in the photo.
The lighting must be uniform with no shadows on the face or behind.
Red eye photos are not allowed.
No lines are allowed.

In case of lost/damaged passports Please notarize Pg. 3 of the application form with the applicant’s Signature OR Thumb print (The right thumb impression for females and left thumb impression for males) in Sr. No. 26.
Except in case of lost passport: Old passport in original. In case old passport is 5 years old or less, please send the previous passport as well.
Photocopies of first 5 pages and last two pages of your current passport.
A) In case of lost passport if photocopy of the passport is not available please submit the notarized photocopy of Indian birth certificate, Matriculation/Higher Secondary/School Leaving Certificate or Indian Photo Identify Card – including Driving License, Ration Card, Election Commission ID, PAN card, or any other document containing photo and indicating Indian nationality of the applicant.
Notarized Color photocopy of current valid US visa on passport or Green card or Employment Authorization Card or I- 797 approval notice documents. Student visa Status holders must enclose I-20 Document as well. If your visa has expired or you have the receipt notice for extension of your visa then: NYC, SFO & HOU Jurisdiction Applicants - must provide a notarized no status affidavit with photocopy of the valid passport and the green card of two witnesses duly notarized + 7 Copies of Nationality Verification Form (Given in Point 2 above) are required and each copy must have an original photograph affixed on it. WAS/ATL/HOU/CHI Jurisdiction Applicants - must visit the consulate in person for an interview before applying at the passport application center
Notarized Photocopy of a residential proof of the applicant (Driver’s License, State ID, Utility bill such as gas, electric or water or Rental Lease agreement or Home Mortgage bill. Other bills or documents will NOT be accepted as proof. For applicants above 60 years of age who do not have any such documents, a copy of their State ID may be enclosed. In case documents are being sent by mail, please notarize residential proof photocopy. All documents being submitted either in person or via mail have to be notarized
In Case of Loss of passport: Original Police Report lodged with the Police about loss of passport.
In case of Loss passport: A letter on a plain paper addressed to the Embassy/Consulate General of India, explaining the circumstances of the loss of passport.
For cases in which the applicant’s appearance has significantly changed from the appearance in the current passport, an affidavit form for change of appearance is required. Please glue a current photo to the form and have it notarized.
In case the current passport does not have Spouse’s name, a notarized photocopy of the marriage certificate is mandatory if your status has been filled as married in the application form. Some consulates may ask for the copy of the passport / US ID of the spouse, if you enclose it along with your application it will help process the case faster. Women Applicants must include the notarized affidavit for change in name from maiden to married
If passport is expired less than 6 months a self-explanation letter explaining “why the passport was not renewed in time” is required.
If Passport has expired for more than 6 months a Notarized Affidavit is a must (Houston Jurisdiction applicants must also submit a Notarized 4 Points Affidavit in such case
Incomplete/ Improper Applications will be turned back at the counter or returned if applying by mail
Embassy/ Consulate Reserve right to ask other document from the list of document mentioned above and/or may call the applicants for interview.
For all Lost Cases (Not the Damage) applicant has to get approval first from the Indian Consulate/Embassy.
Houston Jurisdiction Only:
1. It is mandatory for all applicants to submit a change in appearance affidavit along with their passport applications, if your appearance has changed.
2. It is mandatory for all applicants to provide a change in signature letter, if you signature has changed.
3. A new passport would could be obtained in 30 days from the date of submission of the applications.

Minimum 1 - 3 week (If your case is referred for clearance then the processing time may increase to 6 Weeks or more).
Regular processing time: Additional 10 days
Regular processing time 2-3 Weeks
Regular processing time: 6-8 weeks (If your case is referred for clearance then the processing time may increase to 10 Weeks or more).
Lost and Damaged Passport: Minimum 6 - 8 weeks (If Original passport details are traceable in the data base, if details are not traceable then the process may be longer than normal and may take up to even 3 months or more). In case of referece check it may take more processing than normal time
If your passport is expired for more than 3 years ,please visit Chicago consulate for approval : Timing 0930 to 1230 PM CST(Monday toFriday)
Fresh / Reissue / Correction of Passport
Minimum 1 - 3 week (If your case is referred for clearance then the processing time may increase to 6 Weeks or more).
Processing time for passport renewal is minimum of 4 weeks.
Regular Processing time : 6 to 8 weeks.
In case passport is handwritten and referred for clearance: Additional 4 weeks
Lost/damaged passport: 7 to 9 weeks - If passport details are traceable in online database. ( If details are not available and clearance is required from original Passport Issuing Authority- Only after receipt of clearance)
No Legal Status/Passport expired more than 3 years: No Fixed time frame (Varies on case to case basis)
Note: The Processing time mentioned above is a general processing time however this processing time is dependent on various factors and may vary from time to time.
Processing time mentioned above, do not include time taken by courier companies to deliver the passport. Incomplete/ Incorrect applications will increase the processing time and applicants will need to comply with any changes in the procedure that may occur during this time.
Passport application center will not be liable for any claims of inconvenience or penalties should applicant need to make changes to their travel plans owing to the delays and/or any inconvenience caused due to any rejections.
